Airports in Canada affected by Icelandic volcano eruption ash cloud
A statement by meteorological authorities in Canada says that winds are blowing volcanic ash form the eruption in Iceland towards Newfoundland. Also, the UK Met office says that the ash from the volcanic eruption may spread towards Canada today.
Numerous flights from St. John’s International Airport have been cancelled because of this, according to the airport’s website. Only two flights have departed the airport today, but flights that aren’t cancelled are delayed for after 12.30 local time. The latter flights are listed as being on time.
Whether flights will be further delayed is not yet known.
Earlier today, an airport representative has said that airlines would decide themselves whether they want to fly today or not. Transport Canada is currently monitoring the airspace.
Around 63000 flights have already been canceled because of the effects of the ash cloud that the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland has sent into the European airspace. Airports are closed and flights are being cancelled, causing operators around $ 300 million worth of damage every day, an estimate by the International Air Transport Association says.
