AMD Bobcat and Bulldozer, Two New MicroProcessors
AMD Bobcat and Bulldozer and the company’s latest microprocessors, unveiled at the Hot Chips Conference at Stanford University. It’s important news for AMD, as it’s the first time in seven years that the company decided that it’s time to update the architecture of the processing cores.
The first microprocessor, called Bulldozer, is aimed toward server or high end desktop systems while the Bobcat, that can run with a sub-one watt thermal envelope will power portable devices and laptops.
The two products also represent an major step in the company’s evolution as they move more towards a business that focuses on chip design.
The first samples will probably be available for AMD’s partners in the second part of the year but regular customers will have to wait until they will be able to buy a computer with a Bobcat or Bulldozer chip until early next year.
