David Cameron and Barack Obama to meet at the White House
President Obama will host new prime minister of England on Tuesday morning at the White House. The two officials will discuss their priorities in Afghanistan but there are reports that the oil spill situation will also be an important topic for the meeting. BP (British Petroleum), the company responsible for the ecological disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, is one of Britain’s largest oil companies.
The British Government has set a departure date for the UK’s combat troops in Afghanistan for 2015. The prime minister David Cameron tries to cut the government spendings and tries to cope with the anti-war policies that are growing in the U.K. Mr. Obama and Mr. Cameron will also discuss about the global economic crisis and about Britain’s plans for cutting the current deficit.
The meeting will be held in the Oval Office and it is the first meeting between David Cameron and Barack Obama. Hopefully they’ll build their strategic alliance stronger and strengthen the bond between U.K and the U.S.A.
Since the oill spill has been a priority for the Obama administration, the two officials will talk about the measures BP will make to clean up the mess in the Gulf and how will the giant oil company seal off the well. Of course there is also room for discussions about restoring the region and compensating the people who have been harmed by the oil spill.
According to online reports, the members of Congress are wondering if the company thought that releasing a convicted Lockerbie bomber would help the company move ahead with an oil-exploration agreement with Libya. Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only man convicted in 1988′s downing of Pan Am Flight 103 was released last year after BP urged the British government to allow such transfer, but it seems that the oil company officials didn’t specifically speak specifically to the al-Megrahi case in so doing. And now the New York and New Jersey senators are looking into the matter. Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was released on the ground that he has prostate cancer that would kill him in just three months. It’s been 11 months since Abdel Baset al-Megrahi was released and he is still very much alive.
