Egg recall: Supplier has violated regulations before
Two of the farms involved in the egg recall have ties to a businessman that has violated health regulations before.
Businessman Austin DeCoster is the owner of Wright Country Egg, the first of the farms that recalled eggs that were related to cases of salmonella poisoning.
Even more, DeCoster owns another company, that supplies chickens and feed to Wright Country Egg and Hillandale. Hillandale was the second farm to recall contaminated eggs and to get on the egg recall list.
DeCoster is no stranger to controversy. Over the years, he has agreed to pay large fines, in orderto settle various health, safety and employment discrimination situations.
For example, he has once paid $ 2 million to settle citations for various health and safety-related violations. He was also designated by the state of Iowa as a habitual violator of environmental rules related to hog manure being thrown off into waterways. These are just a couple of the series of violations that DeCoster’s business was accused of.
According to reports, DeCoster’s companies are facing at least two lawsuits that will be related to the egg recall.
