G2, the first HSPA+ handset from T-Mobile

T-Mobile has announced on Wednesday the successor of their G1 handset, the G2. This is the first mobile phone to take advantage of the service provider’s fast HSPA+ network. The T-Mobile website, though, does not provide too much information – at the time of writing of this article the page is down for improvements.

After the T-Mobile G1, the first smartphone ever released with the Android operating system on it, was launched nearly two years ago, creating a whole new class of handsets and applications written for it. This revolution is said to continue with its successor, the G2.

T-Mobile promises a groundbreaking experience as it launches the first mobile device truly taking advantage of the HSPA+ networks, being designed to work at 4G speeds. This is the company’s response to Spring’s fourth generation offer, WiMAX. These two carriers will not be the only ones offering high speed mobile communications, as AT&T and Verizon plan to launch their own fourth generation mobile networks next year.

There are no details currently available about the G2, neither its technical specifications (except that it will be another Android-powered smartphone) nor the plans it will sell with are known. The image previously posted on the preview web page suggest that the handset might be white, filling a gap that the iPhone 4 left on the smartphone market.
