HIV infections decreased as much as 54% with vaginal gel
HIV infections have been cut down by as much as 54% during a test in South Africa.
The gel contains Viread, an HIV drug developed by Gilead Sciences.
Six other gels didn’t work, so this would be the first time such a product actually protects users.
The results of the trial will be shown at a medical conference, to take place in Vienna tomorrow. 445 women took part in the trial. Out of the women that applied the gel before and after intercourse, there were 39 percent less infections overall with the gel than for those that used a placebo product.
In the case of those using the gel more than 80 percent of the time, there were 54 percent fewer infections.
Also, there was a 28 percent reduction with those that used the gel less than 80 percent of the times.
