Iran calls the US “the world’s only atomic criminal”
The Iranian leader called the United States of America “the world’s only atomic criminal”", which needs to be taken out of the UN nuclear watchdog in a message that was delivered at a nuclear disarmament conference in Tehran.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s message started by saying that the use of nuclear warfare is religiously banned by the Islam – “haram” is the religious term.
He also said that the NPT – Non-Proliferation Treaty needs to be modified.
The Ayatollah’s message was delivered by Iran President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, that asked for countries owning nuclear weapons to be banned from the International Atomic Energy Agency, including the United States.
The President accused the US of being the only atomic criminal in the world and lying by presenting itself against nuclear weapons proliferation.
Khamenei and Ahmadinejad’s position comes as a direct reaction to the US’ unveiling of its current nuclear policy, in the week that passed. The said policy limits the number of countries against which the US could take nuclear action, but lists Iran and North Korea as exceptions. This is because they have repeatedly ignored Security Council resolutions about their nuclear programs.
Iran, on the other hand, thinks it has its right to enrich Uranium, as the country is an NPT member.
Also at the Conference, foreign ministers of Syria, Lebanon and Irak have urged Israel, the area’s only undeclared nuclear power, to join the NPT immediately.
