Is Google trying to take over Facebook with social gaming?
Social gaming is one of the rising stars of the online business, and an unexpected one: who would have thought that online farms and mafia simulators would have such a great potential? But they have, as proven by the acquisitions made by bigger companies lately: Electronic Arts has taken over Playfish last winter, Disney has taken over Playdom andĀ GameStop has taken over Kongregate.
Google, it seems, wants its slice of the constantly growing social gaming business. As reported, the company is in talks with major social game developer companies in order to form a “broader social networking service” centering on online games, thus grabbing a slice of the market before Facebook takes over it all.
The service is rumored to be called “Google.me” and has been in talks for some time now, especially after Google has invested in the social gaming company Zynga over $100 million. And the market is still stirring: acquisitions are made, new games are developed and smaller players are slowly but constantly being replaced or bought by industry giants that try to grab a slice of the social gaming cate (just like in the case of Disney and Playdom).
In conclusion, you can expect to see many changes among the greatest players of the industry, and hundreds of millions shifting from one company to the other in this game for the supremacy on this market.
