Movie review: Letters To Juliet, A true romantic comedy

Letters-To-JulietShakespeare, Romance, love, Italy, Verona, Romeo and Juliet, forgotten love and history. It’s the words which define this movie.

Gary Winick‘s “Letters to Juliet” romantic comedy starts in Verona, the city where Shakespeare‘s Juliet once looked down to her Romeo from the balcony. Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried) is on holiday with fiance Victor (played by Gael Garcia Bernal) is contemplating the famous shapesperian love story beneath the balcony where single or women who haven’t found love tuck their love letters into the old wall of love.

The reporter spirit in Sophie tells her to investigate even further on the subject so she offers her support in checking all the letters. Her surprise comes when she finds a letter from decades earlier written by Claire (played by Vanessa Redgrave), a woman who fell crazy in love with Lorenzo (played by her real husband, Franco Nero). Decided to give a hand, Sophie sends Lorenzo Claire’s love letter and helps her find her true love.

It’s fantastic how the two different generations get along in this movie. Indeed, Winick is the master behind “13 going on 30″ so the matching ladies in “Letters to Juliet” shouldn’t surprise anyone.

As for Amanda Seyfried‘s performance, I must admit that ever since I saw “Dear John“, where Seyfried costarred Channing Tantum, I enjoy her movies even more.
