NATO: Talks with the US on transition
The USA will begin talks with NATO about next year’s transition process from Afghanistan.
This process will include some US troops being withdrawn from Afghanistan, as general David Petraeus, the most important NATO commander in Afghanistan.
Discussion will start between Petraeus and commanders in the country in the middle of this month and will last until the NATO summit in November, in Lisbon.
NATO wants to move responsibility regarding the country’s security to local authorities. The war has already taken nine years.
Troops that are being moved from Afghanistan could move to other conflict areas, or could be sent home.
The number of foreign troops that are in Afghanistan at this moment is close to 150,000.
The withdrawal of US troops will take place gradually.
