Shanghai World Expo 2010 has started
The World Expo in Shanghai has started on Saturday, will last for six months and it is the biggest world exposition to ever take place.
Its role is to show China’s status as a superpower of the world, both economically and politically.
The huge show in Shanghai is designed to accommodate a number of up to 600,000 visitors a day and seems to build upon the success of the Beijing Olympics, that took place two years.
President Hu Jintao was the one that held the opening speech at the expo’s cultural pavilion, a huge structure that would remind of a UFO, where celebrities like Jackie Chan have been present.
China spares no expense to make the Shanghai World Expo 2010 a success, considering the fact that the cost rise up to $ 58 billion.
Over 200 countries and international organizations have decided to have a pavilion in the Expo, and some 70 million people are expected to show up in the six months of the event.
World Expos have not been too much of a success in recent times. The last one was held in the city of Aichi, in Japan, but it wasn’t much of an attention grabber.
China is trying to change this situation. The first day of the expo had 204,000 visitors.

For as much of a bad reputation China has about treating their workers poorly, you should do a report on New Zealand and their pavilion. They are working their staff 50-60hrs per week, paying them below minimum wage and threatening them with being fired on the spot if they question any of the illegal (by NZ Law) practises that are going on.
They are having HUGE cost overruns and don’t want the Maori performing Hakas that span lunch and dinner so they don’t have to feed them 2x in a day. It’s all rather embarrassing and a damn poor representation of the country. Pity some very greedy people who only thing about doing a cheap low cost job are in charge and have no idea how poorly their poor planning and tight purse are making the entire country look like idiots.
