Spain loses top position in FIFA rankings, Brazil the new number 1

Brazil is the new leader of the FIFA national football (soccer for Americans) teams rankings, Spain moving to the second position.

European champions Spain was the leader for 5 months, but now Brazil is back at the top of the ranking. The South American team has held the leader position for 143 weeks since the start of the ranking, in 1993.

Portugal has swapped positions with the Netherlands, moving to the 3rd spot, while Italy is now 5th.

The top ten of the world rankings is continued by Germany – 6th, Argentina – 7th, England, – 8th, Croatia- 9th and France – 10th.

The United States of America are now in 14th and Russia is 11th, followed by Greece and (most surprsing for many people) – Egypt.

There were only five matches that were taken into account for the new classification (since April, when the last one was), so most of the rankings were heavily influenced by the fact that older results lose their importance in time.

The last FIFA national team ranking before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa is to be released at the end of May, and a lot of significant moves in the table are expected.
