The Mother’s Day

The Mother’s Day in most of Europe is the First Sunday of May. As you know, May is the time dedicated to the Virgin Mary and therefore, not surprising to us that the first Sunday of the month is dedicated to all mothers.

It is also the month of flowers and what mother does not like flowers? In fact, the celebrations dedicated to the mothers come from antiquity, particularly Greece and in ancient worship of the goddess Rhea, seen in the mythological world as the mother of the gods for having fathered Zeus, Hades, Poseidon, Hera , Hestia and Demeter. Crete and Athens were the most important religious sites of this mythological goddess.

The origin of the celebration in the United States began shortly after the death of the mother of a young woman named Anna Jarvis, who died in 1905. The girl, who lives in Philadelphia decided to write letters to organizations and politicians to pay tribute to mothers all over the world. In 1914 the project would become a reality thanks to the United States President Woodrow Wilson, declared as “Mother’s Day” the second Sunday of May. Later, other countries would join the proposal.

But not all countries celebrate the day, note that in the beginning it have been already mentioned that in most European countries is the first Sunday of May in the United States and Germany, is the second, and Latin American countries, the date varies.
